EXAMPLE OF DEMOSTRATIVE AND REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS:
• A demonstrative pronoun emphatically points on its antecedent .
• A reflexive pronoun reflection back to a noun or pronoun named.
Demonstrative Pronouns The four demonstrative pronouns are this, that, these, and those. They are called demonstrative pronouns because they point out, or designate. This and that are singular. These and those are plural. In the sentences below, the demonstrative pronouns are underlined. Their antecedents are in italics.
This is his lunch. What a pleasure that was! Pick some flowers. These are the prettiest.
Reflexive Pronouns The reflexive pronouns end in self or selves. These pronouns reflect back to nouns or pronouns used earlier in the sentence. They are necessary to the meaning of the sentence and cannot be omitted without changing the meaning. In the sentences below, the reflexive pronouns are underlined. Their antecedents are in italics.
SINGULAR
/ will remind myself.
You fooled yourself.
He talks to himself.
She helps herself.
It turns itself off.
PLURAL
We know ourselves.
You should hear yourselves!
They can't feed themselves.
Notice that yourself is used if the antecedent you refers to one person. Yourselves is used if you refers to more than one. The forms hisself and theirselves are incorrect.
