EXAMPLE OF PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES AS ADJECTIVES:

A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun is an adjective phrase.

Like adjectives, prepositional phrases can modify nouns and pronouns. A prepositional phrase that acts as an adjective is called an adjective phrase. Like adjectives, adjective phrases answer the questions What kind? Which one? How much? and How many?

The adjectives and adjective phrases below are underlined. The words they modify are in italics.

Adjectives                             
American history can be  quite fascinating.   
The blue-eyed child read  the book.  

Adjective Phrases
The history of America can be quite fascinating.
The child with blue eyes read the book.

An adjective phrase follows the noun or pronoun it modifies. More than one adjective phrase can modify a noun or pronoun.

This is a book (of photographs).
This is a book (of photographs) (about history).

An adjective phrase can modify a noun used as an object of a preposition.

This is a book (with photographs) (of great Americans).

An adjective phrase can modify a noun or pronoun located anywhere in a sentence.

Pictures (of the Centennial Exposition) are remarkable. It was an exposition (without an equal).
