EXAMPLE OF PREPOSITIONS:
A preposition relates a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence.
Like conjunctions, prepositions join words. However, prepositions join words in a special way.
Conjunction: The sculpture and the garden are beautiful. Preposition: The sculpture'd the garden is beautiful.
The preposition in tells how the words sculpture and garden are related.
The noun or pronoun that follows a preposition is called the object of the preposition. A preposition, its object, and any words that modify the object make up a prepositional phrase.
Prepositional Phrases
The sculpture (outside your house) is beautiful. The sculpture (with the marble base) is beautiful. The sculpture (near the big rosebush) is beautiful.
The prepositions in the examples are underlined. Their objects are in italics. Each prepositional phrase modifies the noun sculpture. Some prepositions are made up of two or more words.
The sculpture was taken (out of a truck). It was placed (in front of the fountain).
A preposition may also have two or more objects. These form a compound object.
The sculptor works (with stone and steel). She will finish it (in 1989 or 1990).
