EXAMPLE OF LINKING VERBS:
A linking verb links a noun or pronoun near the beginning of a sentence with another word.
Some verbs do not show action. They express a state of being and are called state-of-being, or linking verbs. Such a verb links a noun or pronoun near the beginning of a sentence with another word in the sentence. Linking verbs act as equal signs between the words they connect.
Ellen is intelligent. [Ellen = intelligent]
The forms of the verb be are often linldng verbs.
am is are was were
Verb phrases in which the main verb is a form of be also are linking verbs.
is being has been will have been should be
Here are some other common linking verbs.
appear feel look seem sound taste become grow remain smell stay turn
Many linking verbs can also be used as action verbs.
Linking Verb Action Verb
The rose looks pretty. Anna looks at the rose.
The pillow felt soft. I felt the pillow.
Sometimes a linking verb links a noun or pronoun with an adjective.
She wiil feel better. Anna looks angry.
At other times a linking verb links nouns or pronouns together in a sentence.
John became the leader. It is she.
