Example of Verbs

EXAMPLE OF VERBS:

• A verb expresses action or being.
Every sentence must have a verb. A verb often tells of or shows an action. Some verbs show visible actions. Others show invisible actions.

Visible Actions
The girls swim well.
The dog ate earlier.
Don exercises and jogs.

Invisible Actions
She understands now.
Think about it.
I remember you.

Some verbs are called state-of-being verbs. They do not show or tell of an action. Instead, state-of-being verbs show that a person or thing exists. Forms of the verb be ,am, is, are, was, and were are state-of-being verbs. Information about a person or thing often follows these verbs in sentences.

I am cold.     Ann was joyful.     They are athletes.

Verbs such as appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, and turn can also express being. In a sentence any of these verbs can take the place of a form of the verb be.

feel                      looked                   became
I am cold.       Ann was happy.    They were athletes.

Exercises
A. Write the verb in each sentence.

1. The day begins.
2. Night is over.
3. Find a job.
4. The sun shines.
5. The bird calls loudly.
6. Forget about it.
7. Was she unhappy?
8. Who likes bananas?
